Show Up Toronto - About

About

Show Up Toronto is a labour of love by me, Jenny. The events are collected manually by design and is therefore necessarily incomplete. If you know of a group or an event that would be a good fit, hit the submit form.

As a general principle, if an event has a website or other public internet presence I consider it fair game to include. If an event is only advertised somewhere that requires a login, like Instagram stories or in an email, I ask permission before including. That said, if you run one of the events listed here and would like it not to be for any reason, email organize@showuptoronto.ca and I will remove it.

in acknowledgement

Show Up Toronto is situated in Tkaronto, a city built on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, the Mississauga of the Credit, and the Wendat peoples. This territory is covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee Nations to peacably share and protect the lands around the Great Lakes. It is also the subject of Treaty 13, an agreement between the Mississaugas of the Credit and the British Crown.

Tkaronto is home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples from across Turtle Island, who continue to experience ongoing colonial violence and trauma. The enduring brutality of colonialism is inextricable from other systems of oppression and results in food and shelter insecurity, police violence, environmental damage, medical discrimination, and many other harms. Let us do the hard work of unlearning the oppressive patterns we swim in so we can disrupt these systems and steward our shared home as the Sewatokwà:tshera wampum belt charged us to long ago.

privacy

This site has no ad tracking whatsoever. There is a minimal amount of server-side IP logging so I have some recourse in case of abuse. I need your email address if you want me to send you updates, though you can also use the RSS feed or just come check this site regularly like it's 2003.

Remember that you don't have to register to show up to a protest or a rally, you can just show up. The only data that can be guaranteed to never leak is data that was never collected in the first place.

planned features

  • issues tags for each event for easier scanning
  • events filtering by type and location
  • general resources on getting involved in organizing, volunteer opportunities
  • automated posting to some social media (sigh)
  • non-Google-Form submission form
  • organizations directory (maybe? this might be risky)
  • financial transparency about the service, once I know

If you'd like to contribute a few bucks for hosting costs, you can send an e-transfer to organize@showuptoronto.ca. Any amount in excess of my expenses will be donated to Trans Lifeline at the end of the year.
